UniCafe to open a bar in the centre of Helsinki for students
13.12.2022
Myöhä Café & Bar is the first fully vegan restaurant in the UniCafe chain. The restaurant, located in the new wing of Kaivopiha at the former premises of Suomalainen Kirjakauppa, will open its doors on 7 December 2022.
UniCafe is opening a new restaurant in the centre of Helsinki. Myöhä Café & Bar is the first licensed restaurant in the UniCafe chain, which is specialised in student catering. The restaurant will be open until late at night.
“Myöhä is the flashy little sister of the UniCafe restaurants and a bar for students. We offer our customers a living room where it is easy to come with friends to have a good time and grab a drink, as well as enjoy a snack until late at night. At Myöhä, you can also sing karaoke,” says Anne Immonen, Business Director at Ylva.
From 7 December, the restaurant will be open from Tuesday to Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and from Friday to Saturday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. In future, the concept and opening hours of the bar will be expanded to the lunch restaurants as well. Sami Hongisto, who has worked on, among other things, the bar concepts of Navy Jerry’s and Steam Helsinki, will be the restaurant manager of Myöhä.
The wish for a fully vegan student restaurant came from the customers
Myöhä is the first restaurant in the UniCafe chain with a fully plant-based range of foods and drinks.
“All UniCafe restaurants already offer a vegan lunch every day, and about 50 per cent of our customers choose a plant-based meal every day. Our customers have been wanting a completely vegan student restaurant. I look forward to how Myöhä will be received by students,” enthuses Anne Immonen.
The concept of the restaurant encourages people not only to eat responsibly, but also to drink alcohol responsibly. The list of drinks includes a wide range of high-quality non-alcoholic beverages as well as mild alcoholic beverages and cocktails. Carbon footprint has also been taken into account in choosing what drinks to serve and how to serve them.
“For example, the house wine is served from a bag-in-box, as its carbon footprint is considerably smaller than that of a glass bottle. Because of the smaller carbon footprint, we prefer to serve drinks from the tap to serving bottled drinks,” says Anne.
In addition to a student-priced lunch, the drinks are also priced to suit the student budget: by showing their student card, students can get a glass of beer (0.4 l) or a glass of wine (12cl) for €5. However, boozy lunches will not become a thing; as per Kela’s regulations, the selling of alcoholic drinks will not begin until after lunch time ends.
