The New Student House was completed in the 1910, and was designed by Armas Lindgren and Wivi Lönn. The building found its place next to the Old Student House when the spaces in the Old student house became too small for the growing student population. The former Guild House is located right in the city center, near a wide range of services.
Originally designed for student nations, the A-wing of the building is still today used by various University of Helsinki Student Union organizations for clubs, meetings, and events. Additionally, the central office of the Student Union of Helsinki University (HYY) is located in the building. The other parts of the building were designed for commercial use, and over the past hundred years they have housed numerous restaurants, cinemas, hotels, and even a car dealership.
