Lyyra Project Wins an Award in 2024 Tekla Global BIM Awards
4.10.2024
The Lyyra Block in Hakaniemi, built by Ylva, has been selected as the winner of the international Commercial Project category in the 2024 Tekla Global Building Information Modeling (BIM) Awards, organised by Trimble. Arco Architecture Company Oy, Haahtela Rakennuttaminen Oy, and Ramboll Finland Oy were also involved in the project in addition to Ylva.
The awards were presented at a ceremony held at Trimble’s Helsinki office on October 3. Ylva congratulates everyone involved in the project.
Among the World’s Most Influential Tekla Projects
Tekla Global BIM Awards is an international competition organised every two years and hosted by a publicly listed company Trimble. The competition evaluates and awards some of the world’s most influential projects designed using the Tekla software across eight categories. The competition focuses on the ability to utilize information models, as well as project constructability and environmental considerations in the design.
Lyyra won the competition’s international Commercial Project category, with the jury citing the project’s data-driven approach and strong collaboration. The coordination between various stakeholders during the challenging conditions of the project also garnered attention.
“The Lyyra Block consists of a property complex located between multiple buildings and above an ongoing metro station in the heart of bustling Helsinki. Considering the challenges posed by the location, the project’s success required strong and close collaboration between different parties through the use of information models. Environmental consideration in both design and execution was also essential. The cornerstones of the project were responsible construction and minimizing emissions,” says Ylva’s Construction Manager Olli Saarinen.
Aiming for Sustainable Construction
The Lyyra project, owned by Ylva, which is the real estate arm of the Student Union of the University of Helsinki, began in 2019 and was completed in early 2024. During the project, an impressive 97% of demolition waste was recycled, and the project’s construction phase emissions were reduced by 16%, thanks to a carbon calculator specifically developed for the project.
During its use, the Lyyra complex is fully carbon-neutral, and the premises have been awarded the LEED Platinum certification, the highest level in the international certification system. The spaces also hold an A energy rating, the highest classification defined by Finland’s Ministry of the Environment. Additionally, the office spaces have received WELL certification, ensuring a healthy indoor environment.
In the competition, the jury also considered the project’s precise timing of deliveries, aimed at minimizing the use of the construction site, and the skillful use of information models for coordination as contributing factors to its success in the Commercial Project category.
